World Heritage Week 19–25 Nov, 2024 – Celebrating Bengal’s Living Heritage organized by INTACH West Bengal and Calcutta Regional Chapter

INTACH West Bengal and Calcutta Regional Chapter celebrated World Heritage Week 2024 from 19 to 25 November, with a vibrant series of events across Kolkata highlighting the region’s culinary, cultural, architectural, and institutional heritage.

Day 1 – 19 Nov: Culinary Heritage Blue Plaque at Royal Indian Hotel

The week began with the unveiling of the INTACH Culinary Heritage Blue Plaque at the historic Royal Indian Hotel (147, Rabindra Sarani), known for its legendary Mughlai cuisine. The event was attended by INTACH Convenor Mr. G.M. Kapur, Co-Convenor Ms. Nayantara Palchoudhuri, and chapter members.

Day 2 – 20 Nov: Documentary Screening on St. Margaret’s School

A screening of a heartfelt documentary on St. Margaret’s School, a 150-year-old institution founded by Alexander Duff, was held at Bingsha Shatabdi. The film, directed by Ms. Shatarupa Sanyal, was presented in collaboration with INTACH Calcutta Chapter.

Day 3 – 21 Nov: Illustrated Heritage Lectures at Birla Academy

In collaboration with Birla Academy of Art and Culture, INTACH hosted lectures by Mr. Sumit Basu, who presented his book Downtown Kolkata and Other Happenings, and photographer Mr. Saibal Das, who spoke on the Platinum Palladium Printing Technique.

Day 4 – 22 Nov: Visit to Sister Nivedita Museum, Baghbazar

INTACH members visited the Sister Nivedita Museum, exploring exhibits related to her life, legacy, and role in India’s cultural awakening.

Day 5 – 23 Nov: Guided Tour of Alipore Jail Museum

A special tour of the Alipore Jail Museum (formerly Alipore Central Jail) was conducted by Dr. Jayanta Sengupta, Director of the museum, in collaboration with The Calcutta Club and INTACH.

Day 6 – 24 Nov: Classic Automobile Recognition at Calcutta Club

Vintage cars were honored at the INTACH Classic Automobile Recognition event at The Calcutta Club, with plaques awarded by Convenor Mr. G.M. Kapur. The event celebrated Kolkata’s motoring legacy.

Day 7 – 25 Nov: Naga Cultural Evening and Culinary Experience The week concluded on a flavorful note with a Naga Cultural Evening hosted at Café Captain Americano, 24 Rajani Sen Road. INTACH members enjoyed a traditional Nagaland dinner, capping off the celebrations with regional cuisine and community spirit.
