Historic City Series: Preserving Kolkata Residential Heritage

On 15 November, the Dronah Foundation in collaboration with the INTACH Calcutta Chapter, hosted a pivotal Stakeholders’ Workshop for the preparation of Heritage Homeowners’ Manual at The Saturday Club. INTACH West Bengal and Calcutta Regional Chapter Convenor Mr. G.M. Kapur, opened the workshop with an insightful speech. He emphasized the critical intersection of conservation and sustainability, highlighting that protecting Kolkata’s residential heritage is not just about the past, but about creating a viable and eco-friendly future for urban living.

As urban pressures increase, many heritage homeowners face the dilemma of high maintenance costs versus modernization. ‘The manual empowers homeowners to take informed, conservation-based decisions, ensuring that ‘living heritage’ remains exactly that – lived in and loved …’. The Heritage Homeowners’ Manual aims to provide the tools to choose a third path of sustainable restoration. By providing a directory of local expertise and repair methods, INTACH and Dronah Foundation are making heritage conservation accessible and actionable.
