On 1 February, INTACH Calcutta Chapter organized ‘An Experiential Visit to East Kolkata Wetlands’ to mark the annual celebration of World Wetland Day. The walk served as a vital platform to explore the intricate functions of this unique ecosystem. Participants delved into the dualities of the landscape—discussing both the critical prospects for conservation and the escalating threats facing this Ramsar site.
Bringing together a diverse group of concerned and passionate citizens, including INTACH members, Convenor Mr. G.M. Kapur and Co-Convenor Mrs. Kanchana Mukhopadhyay, from across the city. The walk entailed a comprehensive route designed to showcase the EKW’s role in the city’s waste management and ecology. Participants assembled at Science City, covered Chowbaga, Dhapa – solid waste dumping ground, Bamanghata Pumping Station, Lal Kuthi and Khayeadaha Panchayat and back to assembly point. By witnessing the scale of the wetlands firsthand, the participants gained a deeper understanding of how these vital natural resources of Kolkata sustains the urban environment.
