INTACH Tree of Life: Creative Contest on Indigenous Natural Heritage

On 9 January 2026, INTACH Calcutta Regional Chapter organized a poster making and essay writing inter-school competition on ‘Tree of Life’ at J.D. Birla Institute on Rowland Row. The programme was graced by J.D. Birla Institute’s Principal Dr. Tapobrata Ray and Assistant Professor Dr. Samita Gupta also Head of the Department of Textiles. 

The theme of 2026 competition ‘Tree of Life’, aimed to sensitise young students toward the crucial role of native plant life in our ecosystem and natural indigenous heritage of West Bengal. The ‘Tree of Life’ competition comprised of two tasks focused on the local indigenous plants: (a) art work in poster making (b) writing a 200-word essay. The competition drew participation of 14 young creative minds to explore the intersection of ecology and indigenous heritage. Students from Shri Shikshayatan School and Birla High School (Boys), two of Kolkata’s premier educational institutions participated in the event. The young participants presented amazing art and written expressions of their perception on ‘Tree of Life’ and the importance of indigenous flora and heritage of West Bengal.
